CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“My darling Elizabeth,” Darcy said the next day, as he visited his fiancé under the giant oak in the Longbourn formal garden. Lydia, Kitty, Mary and Georgiana played croquet not far away on the great lawn. Richard stood nearby teaching Anne the new game he had learned last year on his trip to Bath. Imported from Scotland, golf was the new rage. Richard had purchased clubs and now instructed his cousin on something called the putt.

“Yes, my sweet Fitzwilliam?” Elizabeth answered.

“Georgiana and I return to Pemberley tomorrow. I wish I could delay the trip, but my estate needs me.”

“I understand.”

“We will be gone until December. Your aunt and uncle spoke of a trip to Derbyshire to visit her family. I hope we can convince them that this summer is the perfect time,” Darcy said.

“I discussed it with them last evening. They asked me to accompany them in their carriage in late summer. Mary will travel with me to Gracechurch Street and be the in-house family grown up, while we three vacation. They already have their governess, housekeeper and other servants supervising the children.”

“Do you know when?”

“August.”

“Ah-h.”

“It does seem an interminably long time.”

“We’ll manage. I shall visit the Bingleys at Netherfield at least once between now and then.”

“Thank goodness.”

“My lawyer drew up the settlement papers first thing this morning. He will send them to your father. As soon as Bennet agrees to the terms, you join Georgiana as my heirs, even if I fall off my horse and break my neck before we marry.”

“Fitzwilliam, quit frightening me.”

“Elizabeth, I am being frivolous. You know that I am not only a fine rider, but also a careful one. I am no Georgiana or Richard or even Aunt Maddie.”

“Thank goodness.”

“I just want you and your family taken care of. The paperwork will be filed by the end of next week.”

“Then don’t run into any more armed robbers on the way home,” she teased.

“Now, my love, do you want to be married at Christmas or January or February? I wish it to be before Georgiana’s debut season begins, if that is amenable with you.”

“Hmm.”

“Any of the three works for me. Harvest will be over and the grains in the silos. I need you by my side, and I would not leave, if I could avoid it. But Pemberley also needs me by its side. The crops are growing. I need to supervise their disposition and also the shearing of the sheep and the completion of a barn for my thoroughbred race horses.”

“Of course you do. It is now May. We’ll be with you for three weeks in August. Hmm. Should we marry in December or February? I eliminate January. The weather is too unpredictable. We want our guests to be able to attend,” Elizabeth mused. “ I believe as much as I want to be your wife sooner, that I choose February. That way our wedding will not only be the central celebration of the month, it will also not disrupt the Christmas season of our friends and relatives.
